EAC Softball Splits Weekend Series with Central Arizona

THATCHER, Ariz. Eastern Arizona College softball earned a 2–2 split in its home series against Central Arizona College on Friday and Saturday, highlighted by strong offensive stretches and a complete-game pitching performance.

The Gila Monsters opened the weekend with a 12–8 win that featured one of their most productive innings of the season. EAC scored five runs in the first inning and added seven more in the third. Kaylisa Nakoa led the early surge with three hits including a double. Madeline Reed and Karen Castro each drove in two runs, and Malayah Renteria, Gabriella Bonilla, and Vanessa Gavigan added RBI support. After Central Arizona put together a four-run second inning, EAC responded immediately with its seven-run frame. Destanee Nez earned the win in relief with five innings of work and six strikeouts.

Central Arizona evened the series in the second game on Friday with a 9–4 victory. Reed stayed consistent at the plate with two hits and a triple, and Nuvia Urquiza added two hits including a triple of her own. Renteria drove in two runs, but CAC used an 11-hit performance and a four-run fifth inning to pull away.

EAC regained momentum on Saturday morning with a 6–2 win. Nez delivered a complete-game effort, allowing only two earned runs on six hits while striking out three. Hunter Jackson produced a key two-RBI single, and Analise Montiel, Gavigan, and Jessica Szelenyi each added RBI. Nakoa doubled and scored twice, and Urquiza recorded another multi-hit game as the Gila Monsters took the series lead.

Central Arizona closed the weekend with an 8–1 win in the finale. Szelenyi went 2-for-3 and scored EAC's lone run, while Reed, Nakoa, Renteria, and Jackson each added hits. Alexis Guzman pitched all seven innings and allowed only one earned run, but CAC capitalized on late opportunities with a five-run seventh inning that secured the split.

Eastern Arizona now prepares for a four-game road series at the College of Southern Nevada on March 27 in Las Vegas.
