BBall Men vs. Grand Canyon


The Eastern Arizona College men's basketball team opened the 2004-05 season Wednesday night in fine fashion by defeating Grand Canyon University 70-54.

EAC began the game with a basket on the first possession and never looked back. Eastern built a first half lead to as much as fourteen when they led 26-12. Grand Canyon battled back and cut the Monster lead to just nine at the break 34-25. The start of the second half saw Grand Canyon trim the lead to three points at the thirteen minute mark before Eastern went on a 14-2 run to put the game out of reach.

Eastern was led in scoring and rebounding by sophomore forward Brandon Woods. Woods scored a game high 21 points, connecting on ten of his eleven field goal attempts and pulled down seven rebounds. Freshman Hrvoje Pervan scored 12 points and sophomore guard Brad Smith added 10. Phillip Harvey paced the team with six assists and Brad Smith had three steals, both game highs. For the game, the Monsters shot 61% from the field and 46% from the three point line, however shot an abysmal 30% from the foul line and committed 25 turnovers.

EAC (1-0, 0-0) will not play again until Friday, November 12th when the host Ft. Huachaca in the first game of the Gila Monster Classic. Game time will be 7:30 and all the action can be heard live via the internet at www.swsn.net. Other pairings for the Classic will see Scottsdale play Monroe College at 5:30 on Friday. Saturday, Scottsdale will face Ft. Huachuca at 5:30 and the Monsters will play 26th ranked Monroe College in the nightcap. Saturday's EAC game will also be broadcast live on KATO 1230 and is scheduled to tip at 7:30.
