Eastern Prepares for Scottsdale

Eastern Arizona College (7-3, 5-2 WSFL) kicks off its last regular season game Saturday at home at 2 p.m. against the Scottsdale Fighting Artichokes (5-4, 5-2). Second place in the Western States Football League is on the line. Eastern and Scottsdale are tied for second, with Snow and Glendale in the running for first. Eastern is ranked No. 15 in the country.

The Monsters come into Saturday’s battle leading the nation in rushing at 291.5 yards per game. Glenn Milner is the team’s leading rusher with 74 carries for 580 yards and four touchdowns. The Artichokes feature a spread offense that spreads the ball all over the field via the passing game. Eastern head coach John O’Mera said Scottsdale quarterback Joe Caskey is the best in the conference. Caskey has completed 53 percent of his passes for 1,292 yards and 17 touchdowns to nine interceptions.

O’Mera is confident that his defense is up to the task of stopping Caskey and the Artichokes. “Our strength is against teams that like to throw it,” he said. The story of the game will be if Scottsdale can handle the Monsters’ rushing attack. EAC’s defense is far superior, allowing only 13.8 points per game while the Artichokes are giving up 23.4 per contest.
