Monsters Grind Out Victory

The Gila Monsters didn't exactly win any style points on Saturday night against Phoenix College, but they'll take the 27-13 win anyway. The Bears outgained the Monsters in total yardage 360-273, and EAC had 11 penalties for 133 yards. Those kind of statistics usually don't add up to a win, but the Monsters were able to improve their season record to 6-3 with the victory.

Eastern got on the board in spectacular fashion, with cornerback Anton Bowen returning a Phoenix fumble 102 yards for a touchdown midway through the first quarter. The Monsters took a 6-0 lead after Carlos Encinas missed the extra point. The Bears fumbled early on their next possession, and Eastern capped a three play drive with a 13-yard touchdown run by halfback Glen Milner. Quarterback Jawaun Luckey ran the ball in for the two-point conversion to give the Monsters a 14-0 lead.

Late in the first quarter, Phoenix quarterback Shane Mascarenas found Kantral Williams for a 21-yard score that cut the lead to seven. With 13 seconds remaining in the first half, Eastern quarterback Pat Riley hooked up with running back Cooper Blanc on a 21-yard strike. Encinas missed another extra point, making the Monsters lead 20-7 at halftime.

Early in the third quarter Eastern fullback Bobby Dunbar busted loose fro a 42-yard gain, but he fumbled into the end zone. Luckily for the Monsters, Riley picked up the ball in the end zone for the score, and Eastern stretched the lead to 27-7.

Phoenix scored halfway through the third when Azaad Artis scored from 10 yards out. The Bears kicker missed the extra point to make it a 14-point game. Neither team could manage to score in the fourth quarter, and Eastern walked away with the 27-13 win.
