Monsters Hold Off Madison

The Eastern Arizona College basketball team began the 2006 portion of their schedule Tuesday night with a hard fought 76-71 victory over Madison Area Technical College.

The Gila Monsters were a bit rusty throughout the night as they were playing their first game in seventeen days. This rust was very evident offensively as the normally sharp shooting Monsters were held to only 38% from the field - down from their season average of 52.6%. After holding a slim 41-38 lead at the break Eastern spurted to a 55-42 lead five minutes into the second half. MATC would not go quietly and slowly chipped away at the lead cutting it to as few as one with just under two minutes to go. EAC was able to hold on down the stretch to come away with their tenth win of the season.

Eastern did continue its trend of very balanced scoring with four players in double figures. Jerr yck Owens-Murrey and Marcus Palmer paced EAC with 14 points and Ervin Youmans and Terry Dunlap each had 13. Palmer led the team with eight rebounds and freshman guard Terry Dunlap, who played his best game to date, added six assists and five steals on the night.

EAC (10-4, 4-2) will return to action January 11 when they travel to Scottsdale to face the Artichokes. Game time is set for 7:30 MST and all of the action can be heard live via the internet at www.swsn.net. Also, for all of the latest information on Gila Monster basketball log onto www.eachoops.com.
