Monsters Topple 3rd Ranked Cochise College

The Eastern Arizona College men's basketball team opened conference play Wednesday night when they hosted Cochise College. Cochise came into the game ranked 3rd in the latest NJCAA poll but the Gila Monsters pulled of a 92-90 come from behind win.

Eastern scored the first basket of the game but it was their last lead until the final three seconds of the game. Cochise led by as many as 11 in both halves but could never stretch the lead out any farther. After leading 45-37 at half the teams basically traded baskets for much of the second half and with four minutes left EAC still trailed 86-77. At that point the Monster defense finally rose to the occasion and they slowly cut into the lead. A three point play by Ervin Youmans cut the lead to one and an ensuing free throw by Jerryck Owens-Murrey with 16 seconds left tied the game. After a Cochise miss Eastern sped down the floor and again it was Youmans getting fouled and converting on two free throws with three seconds remaining to give the Gila Monsters the win.

On the night Eastern was led in scoring by Youmans who poured in 28 points. Marcus Palmer added 18, Jordan Jamestown had 11, and Jerryck Owens-Murrey chipped in with 10. Youmans and Owens-Murrey each passed out four assists and grabbed five rebounds.
