Softball Season Wrap-up

Eastern Arizona College went into the Region I Tournament at Yavapai College on May 4-5th seeded number 2. Opening day had Eastern beating #3 seed Arizona Western 3-0 with a 2 hit shut out by Pania Monk. That set up an always anticipated show down with the #1 seed Yavapai College. Eastern Arizona College won that game 10-0 behind the pitching of Kendall Rauk pitching a 3 hit shutout. Eastern hitting exploded on Yavapai’s number 1 pitcher Jaya Allen for 13 hits including 4 homeruns. Allen was pulled in the 4th.

Central Arizona knocked Yavapai out of the home field tournament and although they are always competitive they could not hold on and Eastern beat Central 8-6 to take the Region 1 Championship and earn a berth to the National tournament.

Eastern on the weekend had 9 homeruns with Vevesi Liilii hitting a homerun in each game and was named tournament MVP. Eastern finished the regular season Ranked #9 in the NJCAA.

Eastern Arizona College entered the NJCAA tournament with a #7 seed facing Galveston, TX in the first round winning 5-1. Rauk took the win giving up 1 hit with 6 strikeouts. Hitting for eastern was sluggish however we did manage 3 homeruns by Kotrys, Liilii and Pedebone.

Chipola College seeded #2 was next on Friday and that was an exciting match up. Chipola pitcher who has already committed to Alabama was bringing the heat. The Gila Monsters managed to scatter 5 hits and tie the game at 3-3 taking it into the 8th. Pania Monk had a no-no going in to the 6th with 6 strikeouts and was hitting all of her spots. Eastern is the home team by flip and leadoff batter Vevesi Liilii is at the plate and lights the field up with the walk off bomb to left center field and Eastern wins 4-3. A fun game to watch as that loss made Chipola go into the losers bracket and come all the way back to finish #2 behind Temple.

Friday was not as exciting as EAC started out with a home run by Hollestelle over the left field fence but that was about it until the 5th. Defense and pitching allowed Temple #3 to go up 8 runs until Eastern exploded in the 5th with 5 runs of their own. That was a long way back although Kana McCoy hit a single homerun in the 7th, just not enough to get past the eventual Champions.

Seminole Oklahoma was big, strong and powerful and scored 12 runs in 5 innings compared to Eastern’s 9 runs to win the last game of the season for the Gila Monsters.

Eastern finishes 5th in the nation and had a great run. Vessi Liilii was named Most Outstanding Offensive Player of the tournament. We were a fun team to watch and coach. All of our sophomores are lined up to sign or have signed.

Taylor Hollestelle and Kendall Rauk are going to FT. Lewis, CO: Vevesi Liilii has signed at Hawaii-Hilo, Claudia Lopez is expecting to land at Montrose in California, Bailey Rominger had 4 schools lining up to talk with her. Aimie Sorensen is staying in Phoenix to attend Ottawa and Czarina Lorta is being talked to by Ft. Lewis and Utah. Sala Pedebone is narrowing it down between Portland State and Utah.

Thank you to our loyal fans, friends and families who have made this year so much fun.
