Baseball Update

Monsters hosted Trinidad St the 18th through the 20th for a four game set. They dropped the first two games 6-5 in extra innings and 3-0. Sophomore pitchers Brady O'Keefe [Tacoma] and Andrew Ornelas [Safford Az] threw well in their starts. Jacob Brown [Fr Denver] picked up a 4-1 win in the third game with Mikey Hooper [Fr Maui] getting the save. Jeremiah Moeller [Soph C AZ] and Austin Hicks [Soph RF Az] had multiple hit outings while Tanner Fuhrmann [Soph SS Az] stood out defensively. Game four was a 9 inning 4-3 loss. David Montoya [Soph 2b NM] had 4 hits and Jacob Gallegos [Fr CF Colo] continued to run down balls deep into the gaps. The series was quality baseball under ideal weather conditions. That finished the early pre-season non-conference sets at 10-6 having had full opportunities to spread out at bats and mound appearances.

Monday the 22nd the Monsters traveled to far away Yuma to open Conference action the next day against Arizona Western. Monsters took the opener 6-1 as O'Keefe had a normal outing in that he located down in the zone with precision and tempo. Thomas DeBonville [Fr 3b Colo] paced the offensive incorporating his 6.55 speed nicely into the game. Conversely Monsters dropped the second game when the arms did not locate effectively.

Yesterday opened conference home action hosting South Mountain [Phoenix]. We took game one 6-3 with Malu Peralta [Fr RHP Hawaii] getting the W in relief. Montoya and DeBonville each had two hits. Game two was a battle in which saw the Monsters down 6-1 after three. A focus of taking good bats thereafter and fighting back such that the score was 7-4 entering the bottom of the 8th. Hooper gave 5 quality innings in relief. After putting up 4 to go up 8-7 Monsters couldn't close in the 9th losing 11-8. Montoya and Hicks stood out at the plate while DeBonville shined literally in every phase of the game. After the first week of Conference Monsters are 2-2 with an upcoming trip to play Yavapai on Tuesday.
