Monsters Fall in First Series


After delaying the start of the series, the Monsters finally played a doubleheader on Sunday. In game one, Safford product Jo Paul Arbizo, doubled and scored in the second to give Eastern an early lead. Sophomore Juan Steen could not contain South Mountain giving up 7 earned runs in his second loss of the year. Monsters fell 10-1.

Game two saw Sophomore Bryant Dickens hold South to 1 run on 5 hits through 6 innings of play. Freshmen Matt Marquez and Chris Hunter had a double and a triple but Eastern could only muster 2 runs on the day. Marquez and Matt Denker went 2 for 4. Reliever Anthony Garcia was touched for three runs as South won 5-2.

Game three saw Sophomore Chris Cox hold the South hitters in check for 5 1/3 innings allowing 2 runs on 2 hits. Eastern errors allowed additional runs and South added 6 runs in the 8th inning to seal the win 10-0. Marquez had two hits for the Monsters.

Eastern will open up the home schedule this weekend with a three-game series with Yavapai College. Friday will have a 2pm start and Saturday’s doubleheader will begin at 12pm.
