Monsters Shut Down Mesa


The Eastern Arizona College men's basketball team won a crucial conference game Wednesday night when they defeated Mesa College 71-57.

The game was a defensive struggle for most of the first half as neither team could get going offensively. After five lead changes and two ties the half came to an end with Eastern leading 22-21. The second half also started slowly with both teams knotted at 29 five minutes in before Eastern went on a 14-0 run over the next four minutes to take control of the game. Eastern pushed the lead to as many as 21 before holding on to a fourteen point victory.

Eastern was led by sophomore forward Brandon Woods who topped the thirty point plateau for the second straight game, this time pouring in 33 points while grabbing 10 rebounds. Jerryck Owens-Murrey scored 16 and pulled down 6 rebounds. Sophomore guard Phillip Harvey had another solid all-around game scoring 7 points and passing out 5 assists while leading the Monster defense to one of its best outings of the year. On the night, EAC held Mesa to 33% shooting from the field and only 4% from the three point line while limiting to them to 27 points below their season average.

Eastern (16-9, 10-7) will play their next two on the road traveling to Scottsdale on Saturday and Pima next Wednesday. Game time will be 7:30 MST and all of the action can be heard live via the internet at www.swsn.net.
