East-West Showdown Saturday

YUMA — One of the Western States Football League’s oldest and most contested rivalries takes to the gridiron tonight. The Eastern Arizona College Gila Monsters travel to face the Arizona Western Matadors, at 7 p.m. in Yuma. EAC is 2-1 overall and 1-1 in conference, while Western is 2-1 overall and 2-1 in conference.

EAC picked up a 59-0 out of conference win over Everett, Wash., at home last week, while Western was beaten by Snow College, 24-7. Western's only score came on a 38-yard run by Darrell Monroe. Western had a total of 273 yards of offense — 183 of that through the air. Western quarterback Cid Camanse-Stevens was 16 of 30 passing for 178 yards. Western also punted six times and was hit for 11 penalties totaling 81 yards. On the plus side, the Matadors didn’t turn the ball over.

Against Everett, Eastern put up 562 yards of offense with 437 yards rushing on 53 carries. Detrich Clark ran for 120 yards and two touchdowns on just two carries. Brandon Willis also ran for a TD, rushing nine for 22 yards, Demarcus Nunnally scored on his one carry of 20 yards and Ryheem Dixon ran it four times for 12 yards and two TDs.

Courtney Heard ran eight times for 74 yards, Mike Sparrow seven times for 58 yards, De Andre Barnes 11 times for 48 yards, Shatavius Lowe two runs for 38, DeVonta Parker-Johnson five rushes for 11 yards and Silas Jefferson ran it three times for 30 yards.

Dixon and Heard split time at quarterback, with Dixon two for two passing for 66 yards and one touchdown, while Heard was three of three for 59 yards. Eastern did not turn the ball over.
