Monsters Look to Reverse Fortune Against Pima

THATCHER — Despite having loads of talent on both sides of the ball, and being coached by the winningest coach in school history, the Gila Monsters have struggled over the past two years. “We need players to make plays,” said Eastern Arizona College head coach John O’Mera after last week’s 28-0 loss to Glendale.

EAC will face a formidable opponent tonight as it attempts to reverse fortune. Pima Community College put a serious hurt on Phoenix College last Saturday, 36-19. Pima allowed 319 yards total — just 73 rushing and 245 passing by Phoenix. Meanwhile, Eastern allowed 307 yards total in last week’s loss, 259 rushing and 48 passing.

On the offensive side, EAC posted 230 rushing yards against seven yards passing. And special teams gave up a 90-yard punt return for a score and allowed Glendale to block a field goal try. Mental mistakes also played a factor in last week’s loss. No less than five EAC drives were killed by penalties. And an EAC fumble gave Glendale a short field, which led to a touchdown.

Saturday’s game will be played in Tucson, starting at 7 p.m. The game can be heard live on KATO radio, AM 1230 AM, and streaming online at http://tunein.com/radio/KATO-1230-s31534/.
