Softball Opens up Play

Softball opened their season with conference games against Phoenix College on Feb. 1. Our hope was to go to Phoenix and at least split with the Defending Division 2 National Champions. Once we won the first game 4-3, the sweep was not out of the realm of possibility.

Markie Varela our freshman centerfielder from California led off the first inning with a single into left field. Maren Christensen from Tucson hits a rocket to left/center to score Markie and we are on the board. Savannah Formo a freshman pitcher from Hayden High School took the hill for the Gila Monsters in her first college game. Phoenix College went ahead in the third inning scoring 3 runs after a leadoff walk.

The top of the fourth once again had Maren Christensen coming up big; she hit a full count fast ball over the center field fence to bring the Monsters to 2-3. Sabina Chavez a freshman from Tucson gets hit with a pitch, steals second and then scores on Raveon Harrowa’s double. EAC finishes the side by tying the score at 3.

As many things run in two’s, Sabina Chavez with one out in the 6th, hits a 2-0 fastball out of the yard to take the lead for freshman pitcher, Formo and that is how the game ended with the score 4-3.

In the second game, the Gila Monsters obviously celebrated a little long on the first win and lost the game 0-4 on only one hit. The lesson was hard learned, but a valuable one. Erica Beltran a sophomore from Las Cruces took the loss that had absolutely no offensive support.

The softball team will travel to Yuma on the 3rd and 4th for 6 games in the Great Western Shootout.
