Lady Monsters Open the 2014 Season Next Week

THATCHER — After getting a little warm-up action last weekend at a Jamboree, the Gila Monsters volleyball team was back to getting ready for the season opener next week. “We did well,” head coach Shari Kay said. “We’re young but promising.”

The Eastern Arizona College volleyball team will open the season on the road Tuesday, facing Central Arizona. The Gila Monsters will be right back in action the next day as they play host to Pima Community College — and former Safford High School player Miranda Bingham — Wednesday, at 7 p.m. at Guitteau Gymnasium.

This is an all-new Gila Monsters team, with just a handful of returning players from last year. One of those returners is former Thatcher High star Shiann White, while one of the rookies is another former Lady Eagle, Analyse Angle. “Shiann (White) is playing well, and Analyse Angle is playing well,” Kay said. “Jandra Fabian is a standout, and Angel Alameda and Evalani Toledo, from Hawaii, are playing good, too.

“Our blocking defense will be good,” Kay continued. “We are young, and that is a good thing. We will be developing our starters and getting their chemistry together.”

Following the home opener, EAC will be off to Blinn, Texas, Friday, Aug. 29, for a tournament where it will face last year’s national champions and other top-ranked teams. “We play better against tougher teams,” Kay said. “It’s going to be fun, too.”
