EAC Splits With Arizona Western

THATCHER — The Monsters needed a doubleheader sweep Saturday, to claim the conference title. Instead Monsters split, giving the Matadors the title. Eastern Arizona College won the first game, 14-0, but lost the second, 9-7, to Arizona Western.

In the second game, Eastern rallied to tie in the bottom of the seventh. With two out, Amanda Leos singled and Alexis Alfonso walked to put runners at first and second. Kaila Crandell hit a routine fly ball to right that was dropped by Western’s Breeya Howells and rolled to the fence the fence. Janese Timmons, pinch-running for Leos, and Sarah Fitzherbert, pinch-running for Alfonso, both scored on the error and forced extra innings.

In AJCAA softball, each team starts its at bat in extra innings with a runner on second. Western didn’t need the help, putting three runs across in the top of the eighth. Eastern was only able to score their advanced runner, Crandell, thanks to a triple by Nona Pauline.

The split gives EAC second in the conference with a 43-9 overall record and 37-7 in conference. Western wins the conference at 45-7 overall and 39-5 in the conference.

The Central Arizona Region I tournament will get underway Friday and Saturday in Yuma, with the tournament winner advancing to nationals. EAC will play Arizona Central in the opener.
