Lady Monsters Win Holiday Tournament

Oceanside, CA – The Lady Gila Monsters opened up their second semester the right way in the Mira Costa Community College Holiday Invitational last weekend.

After taking care of Merritt College (Oakland, CA) in the opening round, EAC faced Seward County (KS), ranked No. 7 in the country. The Lady Gila Monsters win 81-75 behind a 30-point performance by tournament MVP Shaunice Robinson.

It was not a pretty game early as EAC was called for 19 team fouls in the first half. Despite playing the first 20 minutes with foul trouble, it led 33-32 at the half. The second half proved very exciting as the lead went back and forth throughout. Robinson went 3-for-6 from three-point range and 13-for-14 from the free throw line in the effort.

“Shaunice found a way to make plays down the stretch that helped our overall confidence as a group,” head coach Ryan McAdams said. “The rest of the team fed off of her, especially down the stretch. “But, the whole group played its heart out and withstood a few runs by a really good team. We showed what we were made of and hopefully can keep it rolling.”

Natalia Hausmann added 17 points and All-Tournament award winner Shakita Cox finished with 10 points. The Lady Gila Monsters out rebounded Seward County 43-30, as well, including 21 offensive boards.

EAC played College of Eastern Utah in the championship game the next day and came away victorious 73-63. Robinson led the way with 14 points, but it was a total team effort as the Lady Monsters had six different players score eight points or more.

“I told the kids that it was the ones who bought into their roles and played their hearts out that helped us win all three games,” McAdams said. “I am proud of their performance and looking forward to carrying the momentum into conference. But, they know our job is nowhere near done. There is a lot of season left to play.”

EAC plays at Phoenix College on Saturday, January 4 at 2 pm to resume ACCAC play. The men’s team plays at 4 pm.
