Volleyball nets numerous honors

THATCHER – Led by head coach Shari Kay and sophomore standouts Dreanne Shaw and Kalia Yasak, Eastern Arizona College took home a number of NJCAA Region I and Arizona Community College Athletic Conference awards for the 2009 season.

Kay received ACCAC Coach of the Year honors for leading the Gila Monsters to a No. 9 national ranking and an overall 21-2 record with her team’s only losses coming against teams ranked in the top 15 in the nation. The season came to an end at the hands of No. 6 College of Southern Idaho in the District A Championship. She completed a conference campaign undefeated for the first time in her EAC coaching career with a 13-0 record in ACCAC play.

Shaw was named an NJCAA First Team All-American, to the Region I and ACCAC First Teams, and conference Player of the Year. She was ranked high in all offensive categories, including topping the ACCAC in total kills and kills per set.

Yasak, a sophomore setter for the Gila Monsters, not only fed Shaw for most of her offensive exploits, but she also joined Shaw on the Region I and ACCAC First Teams. Yasak led the conference in assists per set.

Freshman Ami Baldwin was named to the Region I First-Team and ACCAC Second Team while sophomore Marci King garnered All-ACCAC Third Team honors.

With three players making the All-NJCAA Region I Division I First Team and four making the All-ACCAC teams, the Gila Monsters achieved more post season awards than any other team in the conference.
