EAC vs Snow College

No. 12 Gila Monsters Fall At Snow College in Final Three Minutes

EPHRAIM, UT – A special teams play kept EAC’s offense from a chance to win in the final three minutes on the road Saturday, as the Gila Monsters fell 30-24.

With 2:30 left in the game, Snow had a fourth down and 31 inside its own 20-yard line. EAC blocked the punt and while it bounced on the ground, special teams player E.J. Woods tried to pick it up. By rule, if the kicking team makes contact with the ball, it is ruled a possession and when the Badgers fell back on the ball, they had a fresh set of downs to work with. The Gila Monsters were out of time outs and Snow was able to run out the clock.

“We kept it close and had an opportunity to win late,” EAC head coach John O’Mera said. It was our worst defensive game of the season, but we still had a chance to win.”

EAC had 254 yards rushing on the day led by Chris Long with 81 yards on 13 carries. Quarterback Cody vonAppen completed just one of his three pass attempts, but it was good for an 87-yard touchdown to Wayne Jacobs.

Damon Wicker also took some snaps and completed one of two passes. His completion was a 43-yard touchdown pass to Steve Jackson.

“We played our best game of the season offensively against a quality defense,” O’Mera said. “But, we knew special teams and turnovers would decide the game. We gave them too good of field position. You can’t give a team that good a short field or they’ll hurt you.”

Kicker James Carew connected on a career-long 47-yard field goal at the end of the first half to give the Gila Monsters a 17-16 lead heading into the locker room. It would be the last time the Gila Monsters would lead.

With the loss, EAC falls to 2-2 in WSFL play and 5-2 overall. They return home on Saturday, October 24 for a meeting with New Mexico Military Institute. Kick-off is scheduled for 6 p.m.
