EAC vs South Mountain

Sophomore Night A Success Against South Mountain

THATCHER – The No. 9 Gila Monsters were emotional during a pre-match sophomore night ceremony, but found their groove in a four-set victory over visiting South Mountain, 25-19, 23-25, 25-18, 25-22.

“We knew they would play with lots of emotion and they would be scrappy,” EAC head coach Shari Kay said. “We expected a lot from their outside hitters.”

Those expectations were realized as the visiting Cougars’ freshman outside hitter Brandi Rourke connected on a number of attacks, leading the way offensively.

But she was out-matched by the usual offensive weapons for the home Gila Monsters.

Dreanne Shaw, ranked second in the nation in kills-per-set, had 22 kills in the match to go with 14 digs while Ami Baldwin tallied 17 kills and 13 digs of her own. Defensively, Marci King notched three solo blocks and one block assist while Jari Seumalo finished with 18 digs. Setter Kalia Yasak had 43 assists, as well.

With the victory, the Gila Monsters improved to 12-0 in ACCAC play and 19-1 overall. Their final regular season match is at Pima on Friday, October 23 at 7 p.m. Their final home match of the season will be for the Region I Championship on Friday, October 30 against either Arizona Western or Yavapai. The winner of that match advances to the District A Championship match on November 10 at a site to be determined.
