No. 9 EAC Volleyball Sweeps Final Tri-Match

YUMA – The Gila Monsters put a punctuation on the third and final tri-match of the season in Yuma over the weekend with two three-set victories. On Friday, they defeated the host Matadors by scores of 25-19, 25-23, 25-19 before taking care of Yavapai on Saturday 25-18, 25-16, 25-11.

“Arizona Western was the most solid we’ve seen them (this season),” Gila Monster head coach Shari Kay said. “They kept the ball away from Dreanne and Amy so they weren’t as much of a factor. But, the rest of the team stepped up.”

Despite limited looks, sophomore Dreanne Shaw led the way with 17 kills and six digs while sophomore Kalia Yasak distributed the ball with 27 assists and 10 digs. Marci King led the way defensively with six block assists while sophomore Ami Baldwin was limited to four kills, but found other ways to get involved with eight digs and three block assists.

Sophomore libero Jari Seumalo tallied 11 digs, as well.

Against the Roughriders on Saturday, Shaw had a team-high 13 kills to go with eight digs. Baldwin and King each finished with eight kills and Yasak notched 30 assists.

With the two victories, EAC moves up to No. 9 in the NJCAA Division I poll, finishes regular season competition against the Division I teams in the ACCAC with a 6-0 record, remains undefeated in conference play at 11-0, and pushes its overall record to 18-1. The Gila Monsters clinch the outright league title. They will host the Region I Championship, as well.

Next up for EAC is the final regular season home game against South Mountain. First serve is scheduled for 7 p.m.
