EAC vs Mesa

EAC Football Defeats Mesa on Road

MESA – In the second football game against Mesa College this season, the Gila Monsters came away victorious again, this time 24-7 on the road.

The defensive unit did its part once again, forcing four turnovers – two fumbles and two interceptions. Freshman linebacker Gary Wright picked up one of the fumbles and scampered 46 yards into the end zone for one of three touchdowns.

“Defense played another outstanding game,” head coach John O’Mera said. We played as good of a game as we’ve played all year.”

The other two came from the offense as quarterback Cody von Appen scored from two yards out in the first quarter and running back Aaron Palmer ran for a 26-yard touchdown in the third quarter.

“We moved the football up and down the field,” O’Mera said, “but we had a tough time scoring.”

EAC missed two field goals and was stopped twice on fourth down, but was able to cash in on other opportunities.

Kicker James Carew connected on a 38-yard field goal in the second quarter.

The lone score for the host Thunderbirds was a 40-yard touchdown pass just before halftime when two Gila Monster defensive backs ran into each other and the score was 10-7 at the break. In the second half, though, EAC outscored the home team 14-0.

The Gila Monsters rushed for 329 yards and tallied 60 yards through the air while the defense held Mesa to -26 yards rushing and 110 yards passing.

Next up for EAC is a road game at Snow on Saturday, October 17, with kickoff scheduled for 1:30 p.m.

“(They are) the best team in the conference,” O’Mera said. “We have to play our best offensive game and our defense will have to play like they normally do.”
