Volleyball Tri-Match

9/18/09 – 9/19/09

No. 13 EAC Women’s Volleyball Sweeps Yavapai, Outlasts Arizona Western

THATCHER – In the first of three tri-matches of the volleyball season, the Gila Monsters took care of Yavapai in three sets on Friday and escaped Arizona Western in five sets on Saturday.

In the opening match, sophomore Dreanne Shaw led the way with 16 kills and just one error for a hitting percentage of .600. She also had three blocks and 10 digs.

The Roughriders played the hosts neck and neck for the first set before falling 25-23. The second and third sets were more lopsided as Eastern Arizona cruised 25-13 and 25-18 to close out the match.

Sophomore setter Kalia Yasak’s 32 assists were spread out, however, as freshmen Ami Baldwin and Marci King each tallied eight kills. Baldwin had 12 digs and King finished with four blocks. Freshman Demaree Brown tacked on seven kills in the win.

After Arizona Western took care of Yavapai in the Saturday afternoon match, they faced the Gila Monsters in the night-cap.

EAC took the first set 25-22 before giving up the next two sets 23-25 each to find itself in a 2-1 hole. Behind the usual cast of offensive threats, the Gila Monsters took the fourth set 25-16 before winning the fifth and decisive set 15-11.

Once again Shaw led the way, this time with 25 kills, 19 digs, and two blocks. Baldwin had 16 kills and 16 digs while King (13 kills), and Brown (9 kills) took advantage of 52 assists from Yasak in the victory.

Sophomore libero Jari Seumalu had 16 digs and freshman Mamaitaloa Fiaseu had 10 digs of her own.

Head coach Shari Kay was impressed with how her team was able to win the match.

“We fight and we find a way,” Kay said. “Usually when you dig yourself a hole, it’s hard to fight your way out of it, but we did.”

EAC finished the weekend in first place in the ACCAC with a 4-0 conference record. The Gila Monsters are 11-1 overall. Their next match is Wednesday, September 23 at Phoenix College. First serve is scheduled for 7 pm.
