Volleyball Takes Two on Second Day at Yavapai Tournament

Eastern Arizona took care of two ACCAC teams in four sets each on Saturday. First, the Gila Monsters took care of Glendale, 25-11, 25-19, 23-25, and 25-14 before handing Scottsdale a loss by scores of 23-25, 25-17, 25-20, and 25-16.

Eastern Arizona head coach Shari Kay was pleased with the team’s consistent improvement throughout the weekend.

“Every game we got better and better and by the end of Saturday, we were scary good,” Kay said. “Every game we eliminated a few more errors.”

In the first match of the day against Glendale, the Gila Monsters had four players total nine kills or more. Sophomore Dreanne Shaw (12), Freshman Marci King (11), freshman Demaree Brown (10), and freshman Kathy Satele (9) accounted for most of the offense.

Sophomore setter Kalia Yasak finished with 34 assists and seven digs in the victory. Eastern Arizona was led in digs by Satele with 15.

Against Scottsdale, the Gila Monsters lost a close opening set 25-23, but ran off three straight lopsided sets to finish the tournament on the winning end.

Shaw had 13 kills to lead Eastern Arizona while sophomore Ami Baldwin tallied 12, King had 10, and Brown and Satele each finished with nine. Baldwin had a team-high 17 digs while Yasak had her high assist total of the tournament with 39.

With the two wins, the Gila Monsters improved their overall record to 4-1 while their ACCAC record remained at 1-0. Next up is a match at Scottsdale this Wednesday, September 9, before competing in the Scottsdale Classic September 10-12.
