Lady Gila Monsters Split On First Day of Yavapai Tournament

The Eastern Arizona volleyball team, ranked No. 12 in the latest NJCAA poll, flexed some muscle in its Yavapai Tournament opener by handing South Mountain a straight-set defeat, 25-19, 27-25, and 25-19. The Gila Monsters then ran into No. 15 Casper College of Wyoming, and fell in four sets, 25-20, 25-22, 17-25, and 25-19.

In the first match with South Mountain, Eastern Arizona was led by sophomore outside hitter Dreanne Shaw with 16 kills on just 23 attempts. Freshman middle blocker Marci King and freshman outside hitter Ami Baldwin each finished with eight kills of their own to pace the Gila Monsters. Baldwin also led the way in digs with 11.

Sophomore setter Kalia Yasak tallied 29 assists in the match.

In the night cap against Casper, Shaw had a team-high 12 kills for Eastern Arizona in the loss. Baldwin notched her second match of the day with double-digit kills, tallying 11 to go with a team-high 17 digs. Yasak finished with 30 assists for the Gila Monsters.

Eastern Arizona’s match with South Mountain does not go on its ACCAC record, which remains at 1 0, while its overall record goes to 2-1. Next up for the Gila Monsters are another two matches at the Yavapai Tournament on Saturday, September 5, against Glendale and Scottsdale.
