Post Season Awards for Basketball

For the first time since the ACCAC began keeping statistics in 1994, the Eastern Arizona College men’s basketball team had two players earn First Team NJCAA All-Region I and First Team ACCAC honors.

Freshmen Mike James and Dazmond Starke were named to the NJCAA Region I and ACCAC first teams while freshman Donald Johnson was named ACCAC third team.

James finished the regular season with a 19.7 point-per-game scoring average. He also averaged 5.1 assists per game and 3.6 rebounds per game from his point guard position. James was named the ACCAC Division I Player of the Week twice this season. His best statistical conference game came January 28 against Glendale when he had 27 points and seven assists in a 132-131 overtime victory. He had a career-high 31 points at Yavapai on February 18 in a 99-76 win.

Starke finished regular-season play averaging 19.4 points per game to go with 8.4 rebounds per game. Starke was named NJCAA National Player of the Week and ACCAC Player of the Week one time for a week that included a career-high 58-point, 15-rebound performance at Glendale on January 28. With the 58-point game, Starke broke the ACCAC and Eastern Arizona College single-game scoring record. His next-best game also came against Glendale at home on November 22 when he scored 34 points and had 17 rebounds. Starke has tallied 10 double-doubles so far this season.

Johnson is averaging 12.1 points and 10.2 rebounds per game. He leads the Gila Monsters in blocks with 68 total, good for 2.3 per game. He also has a team-high 13 double-doubles this season.

Starke and James finished third and fourth respectively in the voting for conference Player of the Year and Freshman of the Year behind Andre Almeida of Arizona Western and Marcus Williams of Cochise.

Next up for the fourth-seeded Gila Monsters is a road trip to Mesa College Tuesday for a first-round playoff game. Tip-off is set for 7:30 p.m.
