Thanksgiving Classic - Day 2

The second and final day of the Eastern Arizona College Thanksgiving Classic again saw two excellent basketball games. The first of which saw Howard College defeat Central Arizona College 74-68.

The game was very close throughout. After a 29 all tie at halftime Howard slowly began to take control of the game pushing the lead out to as many as 13 before Central crept back. Every run by Central fell just short of regaining the lead and in the end Howard won the game at the foul line by converting on 19 of 31 attempts in the second half.

Howard was led in scoring by Rashad Mintz who scored a game high 21 points. Charles Burgess added 19 and Munir Shakir had 11. Central was led by Scott Cole's 17, Willie Shaw had 13, Gerald Bryant and Jeff Hibbing chipped in with 12 and 11 respectively.

The nightcap between Eastern Arizona and Otero was a see-saw affair that featured fourteen lead changed and seven ties before the host Gila Monsters were able to secure a 71-62 victory.

Otero jumped out early to a 10-2 advantage before Eastern could get untracked. EAC tied the score at 21 but Otero again regained the lead and took a 33-28 lead into the halftime break. Eastern scored the first six points of the second half to take their first advantage of the game but neither team could take control until a late 14-4 run by the Monsters gave them a six point lead with three minutes to play. Unlike Friday's game EAC was able to hold on and come away with the victory.

Eastern placed three players in double figures led by sophomore guard Brad Smith's 19 points. Phillip Harvey scored 17 and Russell Murrey chipped in with 13. Otero was led by Chad Stapleton's 11 points. The big star of the game for EAC was their defense as they held Otero to only 38% shooting from the field and 25% from the three.

Eastern moves to 4-2 on the season and now moves into to conference play when they travel to Cochise on December 1st. EAC returns home Saturday for another conference tilt when the host Glendale. Game time for both is 7:30.
