mbb

The second night of the Gila Monster Classic featured two close contests. The first of which saw Scottsdale outlast Ft. Huachuca 75-64. Scottsdale led most of the first half taking a 41-34 lead into the break. The second half saw Ft. Huachuca hang close and at one point actually take a brief lead. Scottsdale managed a late 9-0 run to take control of the game and then hold on for the eleven point win. Scottsdale placed four players in double figures led by Ladi Makinde's 15 points, all of which came in the second half. Curtis Smith and Mickey Wheeler each added 12 and Dustin Fish chipped in with 11. Ft. Huachuca was led by Ty Gault and Terry Glaze who both scored 12 points.

The finale of the Gila Monster Classic was in fact a classic contest as Eastern Arizona lost a heart breaker to 26th ranked Monroe College 76-75 as the visitors drained a thirty footer at the buzzer for the win.

The first half saw both teams struggle on offense though Monroe was in slight control through much of the period. Monroe led by as many as nine points before taking a 31-24 lead into the locker room. The second half saw Eastern take complete control of the contest. Eastern began by going on a 16-4 run and twice pushed the lead to double figures, the last of which was 66-55 with just over four minutes to play.

The final four minutes saw EAC commit five turnovers as well as a parade to the free throw line by visiting Monroe. In the last four minutes Monroe went 9 of 12 from the line. The last of the free throws came with 29 seconds left and gave Monroe a 73-72 lead. After an Eastern time out Brad Smith drilled a three pointer from the right corner with 4.2 seconds remaining to give EAC a two point lead. The lead was short lived as Rashard Turner from Monroe answered with his thirty foot heave as time expired to give Monroe the one point victory.

On the night Eastern was led by sophomore forward Brandon Woods who poured in a career high 33 points, 25 of which came in the second half. Woods also pulled down a game high 12 rebounds. Hrvoje Pervan added 14 and Anthony Kidd paced the offense with six assists. Rashard Turner led Monroe with 27, Ricky Johns added 12 and Jamal Largie chipped in with 11. For the game Eastern shot 50% from the field and held Monroe to just 33% but Eastern was plagued by their 26 turnovers and the fact that for the game the visiting squad marched to the foul line an amazing 41 times, connecting on 26 of them.

Eastern falls to 2-1 on the season and will play again on Friday, November 19th when they host Tierra del Sol. Game time is 7:30 and all of the action can be heard live via the internet at www.swsn.net.
