Monsters Ready fo Play-offs
Yuma, AZ --
The Eastern Arizona College menís basketball team gave the ACCAC champions all they could handle Friday night, but the Gila Monsters fell 77-66 to close regular season play.
EAC made a run at the Arizona Western to take a five-point lead midway through the second half, but ran out of gas, as the Matadors used consecutive three-pointers from Brad Krause, Zach Downing, and Alonzo Brandon to take the lead and momentum back and coast for the victory. They were the only three long-range shots Arizona Western made all game, but they came at the right time.
The Monsters were led by Mike James with a team-high 18 points while Dazmond Starke and Mario Gill each chipped in with 17. Gill had a game-high 12 rebounds.
EAC was hampered by poor shooting in the first half as James, Starke, and Gill combined to shoot 6-for-25 from the floor. They turned it on after the break, however, as the capacity crowd was silenced for much of the second half.
The Matadors were led by Andre Almeida with 21 points and Rafael Crescencio, who was plagued with foul trouble all night, with 18.
With the loss, the Monsters finish ACCAC regular-season play 19-11 overall and 13-9 in league. They next travel to Mesa Tuesday for a first-round playoff game at 7:30 p.m.
