Eastern Runs Away From Pima
Thatcher, AZ --
The Gila Monster menís basketball team used its size advantage in the paint en route to a 102-77 victory over Pima College in Guitteau Gymnasium Wednesday night.
EAC out-rebounded the Aztecs 56-33 behind game-highs of 13 for Dazmond Starke and Donald Johnson. Starke, the reigning NJCAA and ACCAC Player of the Week, scored a game-high 19 points on 14-for-21 from the field.
Gila Monster freshman Darryl Finley had his best game of the season with 17 points on 8-for-12 shooting, nine rebounds, and four assists. Mike James (16) and Chris Pruitt (12) rounded out the double-digit scorers.
EACís came out scoring in bunches as the Monsters jumped out to a 36-14 lead at the 4:11 mark in the opening period. Early in the second half, however, Pima would close the deficit to 47-37, but EAC cruised from there.
Terrence Hill and Traveres Peterson both scored a team-high 19 points for the Aztecs.
With the win and a Central Arizona loss at Arizona Western, the Monsters are now tied with Central Arizona for the fourth and final playoff spot on the Division I side of the ACCAC. The Monsters improve to 14-9 overall and 8-7 in league play.
EAC will host Cochise College Saturday while Pima hosts Scottsdale. Both tip-offs are set for 7:30 p.m.
