Thatcher, AZ --
The Gila Monsters' opponent was supposed to be the Globe/Miami Sting on Aug.26. It turned out to be the semi-pro Prescott Cardinals, and it couldn't have mattered less. In a game where Eastern Arizona College rarely played its starters, it walked all over the Cardinals 49-0 at John T. Mickelson Field. The first-team offense scored at will, building up a 20-0 lead in the first quarter. Quarterback Pat Riley and running back Lamont Downing each scored on long touchdown runs early. The Gila Monsters had 324 total yards for the game, all of which came on the ground. The defense smothered the Cardinals all night and held them to a ludicrous -16 total yards. "We knew coming in that we were going to have a great defense," coach John O'Mera said. "It was exactly what we needed. We needed to hit somebody besides ourselves. We got a chance to come together as a group, and the nice thing is we get a big win." The Prescott team posed so little of a challenge to EAC, O'Mera had the team take some penalties just to put them in more difficult game situations. Everyone who dressed got a chance to be in the game, which won't be possible once EAC starts its conference schedule next Saturday versus Phoenix. Sophomore fullback Bobby Dunbar finally had a chance to lower the boom on an opponent. "It felt great," he said. "It was nice to finally come under the lights and hit somebody besides ourselves. (We) got a different look instead of our defense we always run."
