Monsters Win Home Opener

The Eastern Arizona College basketball team won their conference home opener Saturday night when they defeated Mesa 89-77.
Eastern led wire to wire but could never put away the visiting Thunderbirds. After spurting to a 17-6 early lead, EAC saw the lead trimmed to four at 26-22 with just over six minutes to play in the first half. The margin at the break was seven, 41-34. Mesa scored the first two points of the final twenty minutes but could never get any closer. EAC led by as many as 15 in the second half and scored their last 11 points from the foul line to secure the victory.
EAC placed all five starters in double figures led by Will Bynum's 21 and Nikola Kecman's 18 points. For the second time in a week Dontae Bryant posted a triple double scoring 16 points, grabbing ten rebounds and passing out ten assists. Markhuri Sanders-Frison scored 16 points to go with his 16 rebounds and Chop Tang added 12 points. Eastern struggled from three connecting on only 2 of 15 attempts but completely dominated the glass out rebounding Mesa 52-20.
EAC (7-1, 2-0) will now travel to Cochise on Wednesday night to face the Apaches. Cochise comes into the game undefeated and in an early season tie for first in the ACCAC with Eastern. Game time is set for 7:30 MST and all of the action can be heard live via the internet at www.swsn.net.
