Basketball Defeats Spire Institute in Opener
Thatcher, AZ --
Eastern Arizona College menís basketball team kicked off their 2014-2015 season Monday night at home taking on Spire Institute. The Gila Monsterís led from the opening tip and never looked back winning by a score of 88 to 51 to begin the year 1-0.
Freshman guard Brad Newman Jr. led the way for Eastern Arizona with 19 points on 8 for 13 shooting (3 for 5 from three point range) and 8 assists. Returner Tyler Chaisson picked up right where he left off last season by finishing one point and one rebound shy of a double double (9 points, 9 rebounds). Newcomer Reggie Oliver made his presence as well by contributing with 18 points, knocking in four three pointers.
However, it was the Gila Monsterís stingy defense that stood out on their home opener forcing Spire to turn the ball over 18 times resulting in 23 points off of turnovers. Only leading by four at halftime, the Gila Monsterís came out in the second half and set the tone early by going on a 15 to 0 run with 17 minutes left in the game. EA held their opponent to 27 points in the first half and 28 points in the second half.
The Gila Monsterís have a quick turnaround this week playing two games in three days. EA is looking to go 2 and 0 as they take on Arizona Christian at home on Wednesday November 5th at 5:30 PM.
