Monsters Overcome Adversity for 19th Win
Thatcher, AZ --
In a night where foul trouble plagued the Gila Monsters, EA held opposing South Mountain to 37%, buckled down defensively, and gutted out a good win against a talented ACCAC opponent by a final of 73-62.
Led by All-American guard Taylor Stafford, the Monsters were able take the lead midway through the first half and never look back. Stafford finished with 30 points, including five 3's and 11 of 12 shooting from the foul line, 6 rebounds, 4 assists, and 3 steals.
With 3 starters in foul trouble, front court reserves Jeremiah & Jeremy Harris played huge roles for EA off the bench. For the ninth time this year Jeremiah finished with double figure rebounds as he collected 10 rebounds on the night. Jeremy added 5 rebounds and 4 blocks in extensive minutes for the Monsters.
Sophomore guard D'Juan Miller also added 18 points, 5 rebounds, 3 assists, and 2 steals in another strong performance.
The foul line proved to be one of the biggest differences in the game. In addition to Stafford being nearly perfect from the stripe, Miller went 7-7 and Jeremiah Harris went 4-6 as all of them made clutch foul shots late. SMCC went only 8-14 from the charity stripe as EAC nearly tripled their output as they went 23-28 from the free throw line.
The win improves the Monsters to 19-10 on the year and 13-8 in conference play. They close out their regular season this Friday night at home against Mesa at 7:30 PM MST.
