Lady Monsters Win on the Road
Tucson, AZ --
After winning their first three games at home, the Lady Gila Monsters took to the road Wednesday for their conference opener at Pima CC, who was ranked No. 17 in the country for Division II junior colleges. Behind 29 points from Shaunice Robinson and 19 from Shakita Cox, EAC won 79-76 and improved its record to 4-0 overall and 1-0 in conference play.
The Lady Monsters jumped out to an early lead, but allowed the Aztecs to finish the first half on an 8-2 run putting EAC behind 36-34 at intermission. The lead changed hands throughout the second half until Pima pulled ahead by eight points half way through.
With 33 seconds remaining, Cox scored on a runner from 10 feet out to give the Lady Monsters a 75-73 lead. On the ensuing possession, Lawre’ll Dobbins was called for a blocking foul, sending Pima’s Melody McLaughlin to the free throw line for two free throws. She would connect on the first but miss the second.
The Aztecs fouled Robinson, who sank two free throws to extend EAC’s lead to three points with 17 seconds to play. Pima advanced the ball up the floor and once again found McLaughlin at the top of the key. Robinson fouled her on a three-point try, sending her to the line with 8.7 seconds remaining. McLaughlin made two of three and the Aztecs were forced to foul Cox with 2.1 seconds left. After she made both free throws, Danielle Loving stole the inbounds pass to run out the clock.
EAC shot 44 percent from the field and connected on seven three pointers en route to the win.
Next up for the Lady Monsters is a home game against Tohono O’odham on Saturday, November 16 at 5:30 pm.
