Lady Monsters Win Invitational
Thatcher, AZ --
In the second game in two days, the Lady Gila Monsters had to withstand a chaotic approach by the College of Eastern Utah, a fast-paced trapping defense and a no-conscience offense. EAC constantly broke the full-court press looking for easy baskets and held the Golden Eagles to just 10-for-51 from three-point range.
Sophomore transfer Pearl Paulo led the way for the host team with 23 points, 15 in the second half, shooting 4-for-5 from three-point range. Freshman Natalia Hausmann scored 21 points of her own taking advantage of an over-aggressive defense to pull up for a number of mid-range jump shots. Freshman Chukwuma Chiamaka had a game-high 11 rebounds.
“It was a test of mental toughness for the team today,” Coach McAdams said. “The second game of a back-to-back is always interesting, and without one of our best ball handlers, I was curious to see how we would play. Pearl and Natalia picked up the slack to help Shaunice (Robinson) with the pressure and the scoring load. It was a good team win.” Sophomore starting guard Shakita Cox missed the game for academic obligations.
Maddy Murphy paced the Golden Eagles with 13 points off the bench.
The Lady Gila Monsters next host New Mexico Junior College on Friday for a 7:30 pm tip-off in the Eastern Arizona Classic. The men’s team hosts Impact Academy on Saturday at 3 pm.
