Lady Monsters Off to a Good Start
Tucson, AZ --
THATCHER — The Gila Monsters wrapped the first week of play with a 4-1 record. Last weekend the Eastern Arizona College volleyball team travelled to a national invitational tournament in Roswell, N.M., finishing 3-1 “I felt like I connected well with my hitting,” starting center Jeni Garvin said. “As a team we worked out a lot of the kinks and really came together.”
EAC beat Hutchinson, Kan., in five games, 18-25, 26-24, 10-25, 25-16, 15-13; Dodge City, Kan., in four, 25-12, 17-25, 25-21, 25-16; and Broger, Texas’ Frank Phillips CC in four, 25-21, 17-25, 25-21, 25-16. EAC’s only loss came to Odessa, Texas, in five, 25-21, 23-25, 25-23, 24-26, 6-15. “Odessa we played second and just made too many errors. We should have beaten them,” Garvin said. “We came together though after every point and error and did a good job.”
The Gila Monsters were in Tucson to play Pima CC Wednesday, winning in three straight, 25-23, 26-24, 25-18. Alyssia Gibson got the start at the outside hitter spot. “I was very aggressive in my hitting,” Gibson said. “I was really focused on my blocks and tried to shut out the other team.” She explained that this year’s team is very different from last year. “Our team chemistry is different. We have the same goal,” Gibson said.
EAC made the trip to Salt Lake City this weekend for a two-day tournament. Scores were not immediately available.
