Eastern Runs Away Fom Pima
Thatcher, AZ --
The Eastern Arizona College basketball team finished the regular season portion of their schedule in fine fashion Friday night when they dispatched of Pima 100-77 at home in Thatcher. The win gave EAC their first conference championship in twelve years and the number one seed in the upcoming Region I tournament.
Midway though the first half Eastern trailed 21-19 but their offense then kicked into high gear spurting to a 47-38 half time advantage. The margin hovered around ten until a 22-5 run put the game out of reach. The Gila Monster lead went as high as 30 with just over five minutes to play before ending with the 23 point margin of victory.
Eastern placed four players in double figures led by the hot shooting of Vladimir Bulut. Bulut scored 27 points on the night on 7 of 9 shooting from beyond the arc. Marcus Palmer added 18, Jordan Jamestown scored 17 and Will Bynum chipped in with 13. Bynum led the team with ten rebounds and Jamestown and Gabor Boros each passed out seven assists. For the game EAC shot 60% from the field and 55% from three along with out rebounding Pima 34-20.
EAC (23-6, 18-4) now prepares for the post season. Based on earning the #1 seed the Gila Monsters have a bye all the way to the Championship game which they will host on Saturday March 10th. Game time is set for 7:30 MST and all of the action can be heard live via the internet at www.swsn.net.
The rest of the Region 1 bracket goes as follows: On Tuesday #3 Cochise will host #4 Mesa. The winner of that contest will travel to face #2 seed Arizona Western on Thursday night.
