Eastern Tops Arizona Western fo ACCAC Lead

Yuma, AZ --

The Eastern Arizona College basketball team traveled to Yuma Monday night to face the 8th ranked Arizona Western College Matadors and left after pulling off a 76-73 overtime win.

Eastern struggled at the beginning of the game as they found themselves down by ten only five minutes into the game. The deficit grew to as many as 11 at 32-21 with just over eight minutes to go. At the half EAC still trailed 42-35. In the second half Eastern slowly fought back finally tying the score at 53 all with nine minutes to go. A late 6-0 run gave the Monsters a brief four point lead but they were unable to hold onto as AWC forced the extra period.

In overtime, Western jumped to a quick four point advantage at 68-64. EAC then scored the next eight points capped off by Vladimir Bulut's seventh three pointer of the night with 45 seconds remaining. A dunk by Will Bynum and two free throws by Gabor Boros sealed the Gila Monster victory.

EAC was led in scoring by Vladimir Bulut's 25 points. Bulut connected on 7 of 9 three pointers on the night and 9 of 12 field goals overall. Marcus Palmer added 18 and Will Bynum chipped in with 13. Bynum also pulled down a game high 10 rebounds while Boros and Jordan Jamestown each passed out five assists. The difference in the game was again the Gila Monster defense. Though they struggled in the first half the defense held Western to only 28% shooting in the second half and for the game out rebounded them 42-26.

EAC (12-3, 7-1) takes over sole possession of first place in the ACCAC with the win. There is no rest for the Monsters as they must turn around on Wednesday and travel to take on Glendale.
