Monsters Top Phoenix College
Thatcher, AZ --
On Saturday night Eastern hosted the 7th ranked team in the Division II NJCAA poll and came away with an impressive 79-64 victory.
After trailing 3-2, the Gila Monsters led the rest of the way. On several occasions in the first half Eastern pushed the lead to double figures but they were hampered by foul trouble allowing Phoenix to close the half time gap to seven at 36-29. PC cut the lead to as few as four in the second half only to see Eastern quickly build the lead to double figures and they cruised the rest of the way.
EAC was led in scoring by Marcus Palmer who poured in 23 points. Vladimir Bulut added 17 and Regan Andersen chipped in with 13. Gabor Boros had an excellent all-around game scoring nine points, passing out eight assists, and pulling down six rebounds. After a poor performance on Wednesday the Gila Monster defense returned to fine form holding Phoenix College to just 39% shooting from the field and 34 points below their season average.
Eastern goes to the break at 9-3 overall and 5-1 in the ACCAC which is good for a tie for first place. The Monsters will be off until January 2 when they travel to Southwestern College and then return home on the 6th to face the Tucson Cats. EAC returns to ACCAC action on January 10th when they travel to Arizona Western for a battle for sole possession of first place.
